Dong Nai Port – 30-Year Footprints

June 6, 2019 marked three decades of Dong Nai Port Joint Stock Company (PDN) since its inception. During the past 30 years, thanks to efforts to overcome difficulties to generate and contribute, PDN has had milestones and figures marking the turning of status, stature and become a core in Dong Nai’s logistics network, a typical seaport brand in the Southeast region.

The name of Dong Nai Port was firstly appeared on June 6, 1989 when the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee signed a decision to establish Dong Nai Port Company (under Dong Nai Province’s Department of Transportation and Communication). This was also the time when Dong Nai Province started to open in order to attract investment. Dong Nai Port was also expected to be formed soon to serve the needs of transportation, circulation of import and export goods in the province and neighborhoods.

30-year achievements

In the inception, Dong Nai Port had only 4 employees and a small capital. The biggest asset at that time and also the greatest pride of Dong Nai Port in the past 30 years was the will and enthusiasm of the employees, from the pioneering generation paving the way to the next generation, nurturing the flame of enthusiasm to create a strong and consistent PDN with a desire to serve society.

The entire employees of Dong Nai Port

From the beginning of almost zero, PDN now has a chartered capital of more than VND 123 billion, the total investment capital for developing the port system has reached nearly VND 800 billion. The indicators of revenue, profit, and output have grown continuously and increased exponentially in recent years.

The Port’s revenue was only VND 2.36 billion, profit of VND 357 million and total cargo of only 140 thousand tons in 1995. However, PDN had achieved turnover of VND 671 billion, profit of more than 111 billion dong and total cargo output reached 6.4 million tons by 2018. In 2011, the containers’ volume was 5,860 TEUs. In 2018, it was 673,000 TEUs. The total output of goods (converted) in 2018 exceeded 12 million tons.

General cargo operations at Go Dau Port

The estimated volume of handling general cargo reached 3.3 million tons, the volume of container cargo reached 345,000 TEUs in the first 6 months of 2019 with a total revenue of over VND 340 billion, accounting for 108% year on year.

From a port with only 60m of 2,000 DWT wharf in the very first years of establishment, PDN now owns three port areas strategically located both by waterway and land with a total area of 727,000 m2, 08 wharves, 2 barges, 6 warehouses with an area of 26,000 m2  and a closed service chain. Especially, Go Dau port has been able to receive up to 30,000 tons-cargo ships since 2015.

Over the past 30 years, based on the foundation built with prestige, the effort to commit to customers, partners and the enthusiasm with a seaport business mission, PDN has been receiving trusts of numerous domestic and international customers and partners.

Container cargo operations at Long Binh Tan Port

The customers who trusted and financed for the Port to gradually build and develop in the first stage such as UIC, Shell Vietnam, TPC Vina, VT Gas, JVF; the regional and worldwide major shipping lines and cargo owners cooperating with the Port such as Riverbank, Yangming, Maersk Line, Gemadept, APL, CMA_CGM, MSC…and the long-term attachment of many customers and partners have been a guarantee for the reputation and service quality at PDN. It is also a significant achievement for PDN’s ability to meet international standards in logistics service provision.

Effective Connectivity Strategy

Currently, PDN includes two areas of international commercial ports, Long Binh Tan Port and Go Dau Port. They are operating effectively not only as seaports for domestic, import-export general cargo handling services, domestic container cargo… but also play the role of ICD in close association with deep-water seaport to create a supply chain of import-export goods by sea for container handling services… In an effort to invest in infrastructure and equipment, constantly improve the quality of services, PDN is considered to be an effective connection for customers in Dong Nai Province and the Southeast region.

Overview of Go Dau Port

According to PDN’s Board of Directors, one of the decisive factors for PDN’s success in the past 30 years is the strategic vision and the right directions of the previous generation of leaders. In particular, the conversion of Long Binh Tan port function into a container port and simultaneously defining the strength of Go Dau Port as bulk cargo, liquid cargo is the accurate industry orientation which develops PDN in accordance with an appropriate cargo segment and promote their strengths.

Especially, the success of container operation at Long Binh Tan Port not only helps the Port to achieve a breakthrough in revenue and output but also bring social effects such as contributing to solving the overload in road transport, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution, while reducing costs and transport time for customers.

In addition, PDN has strengthened connectivity with deep-water ports during the past to promote the strategic direction, thereby increasing the volume of cargo clearance of the Port. Currently, container volume from Thi Vai – Cai Mep Port to Dong Nai Port accounts for 80% of PDN’s output, the remaining 20% is from PDN to Ho Chi Minh City ports.

At the same time, in an effort to speed up the cargo clearance, PDN has connected to the Vietnam National Single Window’s electronic customs clearance system. 2018 marked a new development with the establishment of Operation Team 2 – Bien Hoa Customs Branch at PDN. Thereby, it supports customers to conduct the customs clearance procedures at the Port quickly and conveniently, save time and facilitate import and export activities in the area for further development.

Currently, PDN has stepped up investment in expanding warehouse areas and investing in new equipment at Long Binh Tan Port and Go Dau Port in order to increase its exploiting and operating capacity. In 2019, the Port is expected to complete and put into operation an additional 30,000 DWT pier (berth B5), to upgrade 02 wharves A3 and B3 from 10,000 and 15,000 DWT to 30,000 DWT, expanding 50m connecting wharf No.2 and No 3 at Long Binh Tan Port, expanding 8 ha in Go Dau Port. Thereby, it will meet the increasing loading and unloading demand of the customers.

Overview of Long Binh Tan Port

In 2019, PDN will also try to coordinate with the authorities to complete the license procedures to become a border port in parallel with the establishment of a border customs office at Long Binh Tan Port. The objective of this plan is to diversify commodities and cargo sources through the Port, enabling customers to conduct customs clearance for all goods right in Dong Nai to minimize time and costs for customers and improve the competitiveness of the Port.

Hướng đến Top 5 cảng biển hàng đầu Việt Nam

Entering a new stage, PDN strives to continuously increase corporate value, the value of contributing to the local development on the basis of modern management, effective investment, business culture, and social responsibility… Therefore, PDN can bring to its customers, partners, shareholders, and employees the sustainable values accumulated from the common development of PDN and society.

Board of Directors and Board of Management of Dong Nai Port

Sharing the goals of PDN, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai – Chairman of PDN said: “From the foundation of the brand reputation and resources of PDN, we boldly set the goal of entering the Top Companies with businesses revenue of 1,000 billion by 2022 and strive to become one of the Top 5 seaports in Vietnam.
